The first release in a series of #tpdpostcardsongs, songs that are unrelated, and different from each other. Outside our normal genre - where we take a musical 'vacation' to a new location.
“Midlife Elegy” reflects on how life can feel repetitive and constricting as the years stack up—days shaped by caring for children, supporting aging and sick parents, full time jobs, financial hardship, and carrying the weight of responsibility – while trying to remain hopeful. One of the main inspirations for this song was Jonathan Raunch's book 'Happiness Curve - why life getting better after 50'.
The song also looks outward, acknowledging the reality of living in our modern world, punctuated with news headlines. Rather than offering answers, “Midlife Elegy” deals with heaviness through humor and simplicity as we ‘take life day by day’.
lyrics
I drive home and I turn on the news
Those sound bites just give me the blues
Dark days post modern condition
It’s all bad, but I still gotta clean the kitchen
I get so bored every day is the same
I scroll and scroll how’d that get so ingrained
I work a job I tolerate
It pays my bills,
It puts food on our plates
I saw myself in a photo from a long time ago
It felt unfamiliar, someplace I didn’t know
We used to hang out in that dive bar on Ganz
Now it’s all home insurance and strat five year plans
My Mom is sick and my Dad is long gone
My teenage kids are convinced that I’m wrong
If you see me please stop and say hi
Life’s too short to just walk on by
What can I say, I’m doing my best
I help when I can and I leave out the rest
Text me a message drop me a line
I’ll answer your phone call but maybe not right on time
That’s life, I take it day by day
That’s life, I don’t know what else to say
That’s life, it’s just some middle age strife
That’s life, I take it day by day
That’s life, I don’t know what else to say
That’s life, it’s just some middle age strifecredits
